WEEK 6: SUPERVISOR SESSION (VIA MAIL)
Excerpt of my e·mail
»Over the weekend I made a second photo test. Unfortunately, I’m not too happy with the results. These two are so far my favorite (the second picture is from my first photo test):«
»Here are some of the others:«
»I prefer them when they are rather minimal, simple and not too much is going on. Also, when actually a bit more of the architecture is visible, so some are just too dark. But that’s just the formal aspect.«
»What is more difficult for me is that I think they are lacking content and an interesting story. In my view, it’s quite boring and I have no idea who would want to look at this. So obviously, I’ll have to come up with a better idea and story.«
»What do you think?«
Excerpt of Shane’s answer
»I think there are some interesting things going on here. The value of experimentation is being able to work ‘through’ ideas rather than creating a finished and polished work.«
»The first image with the beach over the wall above the bed and then bleeding into the window is promising. Maybe see if you can blend it more into the window so it is less of a gap – it may be that you need to take several images and merge these together ..?«
»I also like the rain and the beach together. Again, try and see how you might be able to blend these together more effectively.«
»Don’t worry about who would want to look at them. Again, it is about being able to test and experiment ideas and captures, rather than presenting completed works. If you think of it like this, it doesn’t really matter whether anyone would be interested, because that is not why they are looking at the work, they are looking at it as progress towards something else «
»So, I would keep trying with this, and also think about how the external image is playing off the internal …«
»The other option might be to move back (like the ‘music’ version) and include the artifice in the show – show the projector, show the ‘trick’ …«
»Have another go and send them through again.«
Excerpt of my reply
»It’s interesting that you suggest to have a smaller gap of the projection onto the wall/window because I actually had it there on purpose and like the layering that happens.«
»What I’m still lacking is a good way of telling if a photo turned out well or not during the photo shoot.«
»And also an interesting thought of taking several pictures and layering them. I believe you meant the same image to be in better control of how the projection looks but I’m actually thinking of two different images … I’ll do that in another test.«
»I would love to play more with the external and internal pictures but so far I haven’t found an interesting way of doing that.«
