ONLINE DOSSIER: CODY WILLIAM SMITH
Just like Victoria Siemer's work, I have known Smith's series A Moment's Reflection since a few years. His landscape photographs are impressive and the mirror adds an effective extra layer. Comparing Siemer's and Smith's work, Siemer's series speaks more to me. Possibly because it seems simpler and more subtle. And also more dreamlike, less “real”. Yet, my image is closer to Smith's work as it uses similar elements and is an actual photograph without added digital elements.
If this photograph was not part of a series, I would feel that it is too close to Smith's work (with a less beautiful landscape than he is showing). My mirror is closer to the camera, bigger in the frame and cropped on one side. But the main difference is that it will be displayed in a dialogue with another photograph next to it. This changes the perception massively.
