ONLINE DOSSIER: SOLARIS (BY ANDREI TARKOVSKI)

In the conversation I had with Pia Johnson, she mentioned Andrei Tarkovski’s polaroids. And apparently Lars von Trier was an admirer of Andrei Tarkowski. Enough reasons to watch this 167 min movie. The visual language, how Tarkowski portraits the women in his movie and plays with reflection and beautiful compositions are dreamlike. Even though it is a sci-fi movie, he does not emphasize this. He uses landscape pictures to pause the narrative, a method I am also using in my series: photographs that fit the other pictures but are not as complex and rather give the viewer time to briefly relax.
