ONLINE DOSSIER: ERWIN WURM

csm_EW_F_773.001_310b452e3a

Shane describes Erwin Wurm's work as »quirky« (schrullig), Steven describes it as »idiosyncratic« (eigenwillig).

»I am interested in the everyday life. All the materials that surrounded me could be useful, as well as the objects, topics involved in contemporary society. My work speaks about the whole entity of a human being: the physical, the spiritual, the psychological and the political.« – The Artist that Swallowed the World.

>> »I also use humor as a weapon by showing everyday life from a different perspective« and »I am interested in turning things upside down and thus encountering new realities.« … In my work I might use this to get the attention of the viewer. But to do what? What am I pointing towards?

“[For me] humor is primarily a method for getting people’s attention—it should ultimately prompt people to look at things more carefully.” – http://www.artnet.com/artists/erwin-wurm/

»Wurm challenges not only the physical relationship between human and object with unconventional pairings, but also the individual and societal perception of self and one’s surroundings. Historian Stephen Berg has described the treatment of the body and self in Wurm’s work, stating that ‘The more that is poked into its orifices, and the more food and clothing that is accumulated around it, the clearer it becomes that the body and the self are no longer masters in their own house, and as a result achieve self-expression more through self-deformation.’ (Stephen Berg, ‘The Ridiculous Human Tragedy’, translated by Michael Turnbull, in Berg 2009, p.48.)« – https://www.tate.org.uk/art/artworks/wurm-one-minute-sculptures-p82013
